There was a time in my life when I had to learn how to stretch my dollar. At that point I didn't realize that experience was going to let me assist you right now. Funny how life works. This is what I did:
Create a budget. First month save all your grocery and other food receipts or write costs in a small notebook for one month. This will give you an idea of how much you spend on food each month. Set your budget.
Create a shopping list so you stay focused in the store and avoid getting distracted by foods you really do not need.
Skip buying the processed, packaged, frozen foods. Make your own crackers, chips and home-made meals you can freeze.
Avoid eating out, make food at home or bring snacks from home when you are out. This one really helped me save. I noticed that my self and others would go out and eat even though there was plenty enough food to make a whole-some meal at home. Okay if you really enjoy eating outside of home, cut back to 1x/month or split the meal with a friend = split the cost. Most of the time restaurants serve a plate for one that's really for two.
Buy organic vegetables and fruits that are on SALE!
Slowly, stock your kitchen with glass jars of dried beans, grains, and two different kinds of nuts/seeds (split mung beans, quinoa, gluten free oatmeal, black rice, almonds, pumpkin seeds) Rice + quinoa & rice + beans = complete protein add veggies and you are good to go!
Always have ginger, garlic, and onions. These three make a wonder base to any meal you make.
Grow your own herb garden: basil, parsley, rosemary, cilantro. Most herbs are low maintenance, easy to grow and pack much flavor into meals. If you love to garden grow some veggies too :)!
